Arma: opening up space. Moscow gas plant Arma plant on Kursk for rent

“More about galleries, then Arma is about nightclubs,” wrote The Village at the dawn of its history in 2010. And Denis Simachev, who located his studio on the outskirts of the Kursky station, inviting friends here, promised that everything “will be like in London.” Neither the famous designer nor many other signs of the 2000s are no longer at Arma, and the space has been actively updated for several years now. In continuation of the new life of Moscow’s creative clusters, The Village learned about what the new “Arma” will be like.

Story

Construction of the Moscow Gas Plant began in 1865 - four years earlier, several merchants proposed to the Governor General to organize gas lighting in the city. The tender for the concession was won by the English Society for Lighting the City of Moscow with Fluid Gas. It bought part of the vegetable gardens on the banks of the Chernogryazka River ( now enclosed in a sewer right tributary of the Yauza. - Approx. ed.) near Nizhny Susalny Lane. The first factory buildings were two two-story buildings for offices and workers' accommodation designed by the architect Fyodor Dmitriev. The brick gas tanks were designed by the architect Rudolf Bernhard. The gas plant itself, consisting of several workshops, was built between the reservoirs and the administrative building. Already in 1868, 3 thousand gas lamps were lit in Moscow. In 1905, the plant was transferred to the city, and a few years later its reconstruction began to increase capacity. According to the design of engineer and architect Vladimir Shukhov, six new factory buildings and an additional gas tank were erected on the territory.

IN Soviet years the plant was an enterprise of national importance: until the middle of the 20th century, it supplied gas to the whole of Moscow. However, after the Saratov-Moscow gas pipeline was commissioned in 1946, the need for fuel production disappeared. Production was reoriented to the production of gas equipment: stoves, meters and other equipment. According to the Moscow General Plan of 1971, the plant was included in the number of enterprises moving outside the city.
In the 1990s, gas shut-off valves began to be produced there, and the enterprise itself was finally renamed “Arma”. Production stopped in 2002, and tenants began to occupy the empty workshops.

"Arma" - the territory of creativity

After privatization in the 1990s, the plant at various times belonged to the Slavyansky and Vizavi banks. Today the owner of the territory is the company " Big city" The first tenants at Arma were designers Denis Simachev and Katya Gomiashvili, the Alexander Yakut gallery and the Gazgolder club. Thanks to them, “Arma” became one of the centers of cultural life in Moscow. In 2008, the Zhivi media group moved to Arma, and the Arma 17 club opened. It was the low rental rates in unrenovated buildings that attracted people to Arma a large number of creative projects.

In the mid-2000s, large-scale reconstruction was planned on the territory of the former plant. The project involved the demolition of most of the buildings, but the concept attracted public attention and the work was curtailed. The Arma press service, however, notes that in the past there were many plans for the development of the territory and not all of them were related to the owners.

"Arma" - business park

The Bolshoy Gorod company did not abandon its plans for major renovations, and work began in 2011. The four gas tanks were repaired first, then the building Soviet period Next door. After the renovation, prices also increased: as they say on Arma, now the technical equipment of the facilities corresponds to class A. At the same time, the early tenants also moved out, including the Zhivi media group. Last year, the Arma 17 nightclub announced its move.

The renovation of the former auxiliary workshops of the gas plant, built at the beginning of the 20th century, is now being completed. A pedestrian zone, ample parking and new navigation will appear on the territory of the former plant. The developer will improve the surrounding area. The purpose of the changes is to create a space that is attractive to the general public and retail and office tenants. The renovated territory of the plant is now called a business park. Among the new tenants are two fitness clubs, beauty salons, restaurants, coffee shops, dry cleaners, travel agencies, and a medical center.

The reconstruction of the buildings is being carried out by the architectural bureau “Sergey Kiselev and Partners” - the authors of the Mirax Plaza business complex, the Yandex office and a spectacular house on the corner of Ostozhenka and 1st Zachatievsky Lane. The work is planned to be completed by the end of 2015.

The name “English Society for Lighting the City of Moscow with Fluid Gas” thoroughly explains what this organization did. In the 19th century, gas began to be used to illuminate the streets of London, Berlin, Paris, and by 1861 Moscow became interested in using modern technologies, providing the above-mentioned Society with a long name with land for the construction of a gas plant. The territory was allocated in Susalny Lane on the banks of the Chernogryazka River.

Construction of the Moscow Gas Plant began in 1865; the first buildings to produce gas from coke were erected. Two buildings, intended for offices and a dormitory for workers, faced the alley. They were designed by Fedor Dmitriev. And gas tanks - gas storage tanks that can withstand heavy operating loads and a caustic environment - were built according to the design of architect Rudolf Bernhard, a professor at the St. Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineers. The diameter of these giant cylinders is 40 meters.

By 1882, Moscow streets were already illuminated by 9,000 gas lamps, but the townspeople were in no hurry to use gas in their homes. It was not a cheap pleasure, and besides, kerosene traders spread rumors about the dangers of gas to health. The company of Bouquier and Goldsmith was counting on completely different dividends and after the expiration of the concession the enterprise was transferred to the ownership of the city.

In 1911, the Moscow City Duma allocated 4 million rubles for the reconstruction and development of the gas plant. With this money, in order to increase the plant's capacity, six new factory buildings and an additional gas tank of smaller diameter were erected according to the designs of architects Maxim Geppener, Nikolai Milyukov, Mikhail Stepanov and Alexander Roop. The ceilings were calculated by engineer Vladimir Shukhov. The new buildings housed the equipment and retort departments, an ammonia plant, facilities for purifying gas from impurities, a meter plant, and a water gas plant. During this reconstruction, half of the old large factory building was demolished.

IN Soviet time The Moscow Gas Plant grew with two more buildings and until the middle of the 20th century provided gas supply to Moscow, but after the commissioning of the Saratov-Moscow pipeline in 1946, the need to keep hazardous production in the center of the capital disappeared and the enterprise switched to the production of gas equipment: stoves, meters and other equipment . In the 1990s, the plant began producing gas shut-off valves, and the enterprise itself was renamed the ARMA plant.

In 2002, the Arma plant ceased to exist and the question arose about the demolition of most of the ensemble due to the “lack of historical and architectural value and unsatisfactory technical condition load-bearing structures." After discussions with the participation of all interested parties, it was decided to preserve the facades of the buildings with a complete reconstruction of the interior to suit modern needs. Currently, the factory space is leased to tenants - restaurants and cafes, art galleries, clubs, design studios, shops and showrooms.

The shortest route to Arma is through the underground passage from the Kursky railway station and the Kurskaya metro station. On weekdays the place is crowded; staff from nearby institutes and students come from trains.

Nizhny Susalny Lane was named after a factory that once produced gold leaf. Only a couple of houses on the even side of the alley remind us of old Moscow.

All Moscow enterprises that became objects of redevelopment were built before the Great Patriotic War and from each one volunteers went to the front. In memory of those who did not return, factory workers erected memorials with lists of those killed in the war. " Immortal Regiment» Moscow Gas Plant is carved on granite on one of the main squares of “Arma”. But there are other examples. After the closure of production, an unexpected question arose: who will now take care of the monuments? It’s sad, but some were abandoned (ZIL, “ Esters") or completely dismantled (at Yamsky Field).

There are three checkpoints for entry to Arma, the main one is located in Nizhny Susalny Lane, the other two are not yet so well equipped.

You can walk around the territory for a long time, looking at the ancient red bricks combined with the modern glazing of the buildings. But there are practically no small signs of a bygone era left, not even a single sewer manhole from pre-revolutionary times or the first years Soviet power not detected.
