A leading research institution within the Russian Academy of Sciences, studying world history.

The Institute was established in October 1968. Prior to this, work on all general history were conducted as part of a single unit created in 1934.

Priority areas of research at the Institute general history RAS are: theoretical and methodological problems studying world history; global studies; comparative study ancient and medieval civilizations; history of the 20th century; history of European countries, USA, African countries and Latin America; Russia in world history; history of the post-Soviet space; history of religion and church; special historical disciplines.

Currently, the staff of the Institute of Historical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences includes 60 doctors and 87 candidates of historical sciences. Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences is a leading research institution consisting of Russian Academy sciences that studies world history. The Institute was created in October 1968. Before this, in 1934-1968, work on general history was carried out as part of the single Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

The IVI RAS employs more than 200 people, including 6 academicians of the RAS, 4 corresponding members of the RAS, more than 180 doctors and candidates of science.

Main areas of research:

  • modern models of the historical process;
  • problems of interdisciplinary dialogue;
  • historical and cultural anthropology;
  • collective memory and historical consciousness;
  • history of religion and church;
  • formation and development of civil society.

The focus is traditionally on the history of Western and of Eastern Europe and individual European regions, North and Latin America, African countries. Separate areas of research formed at the Institute in the early 2000s include Russia in world history and the history of the CIS countries. The Institute pays special attention to the problems of interaction and mutual perception of cultures and societies in the world historical process.

One of the key areas of the Institute’s work is the integration of science and education. In 2003, on the basis of the Institute of History and History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Faculty of History State University humanities The Scientific and Educational Center for History was created. The Institute actively cooperates with leading research and educational centers in Russia and abroad.
