The circuit launches annually free courses in programming for students in Yekaterinburg, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Izhevsk, Perm and Kazan. Since 2013, we have grown to 7 cities and 13 universities, developed our own online platform ulearn.me, where since February 2018 there are courses not only for C# developers, but also a course for testers.

This is exactly what we talked about with Katya Chaplinskaya, development manager and course organizer. Katya told us what features await the cadets this year, how the preparation went and what the prospects for the course are.

Katya, tell me in just a few words what kind of course this is?

This is the fifth course for beginners, which introduces cadets to the basics of testing. Traditionally, at the end of February we recruit a group of approximately 30 students and young professionals. Such a small group makes it possible to pay attention to each student, and the teachers do not get tired checking their homework. Based on the experience of past years, we assume that 10-15% of students will not reach the end of the course, so the group will be further reduced. Classes began on February 22, all of them will be held on Maloprudnaya twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The course will end before the May holidays, because in mid-May the cadets have no time for classes =)

What new have you come up with this time?

This year we recorded the entire theoretical course on ulearn.me and made it publicly available. We came up with 16 topics that our cadets will study at home and devote their office hours to practice.

This format of learning is called “flipped” or “reverse learning.” Khan Academy uses it, and their experience inspired our company. This format frees teachers and students from the lecture routine, replacing standard classroom lectures with videos and mini-tasks at home. At the beginning of the course, students receive the first set of assignments and a link to theoretical material. A week later, they meet with the teacher to discuss the material they have learned, go over homework and receive new tasks and a link. And so every week - new material, assignments and practice.

The “flipped learning” format was proposed several years ago by Pasha Egorov, head of the training department, but we provided only the theory in the form of links to articles, books or webinar recordings. A couple of years ago, we thought it would be cool not to refer to third-party sources, but to record all the videos for the course ourselves.

How was the work on the video? As far as I know, recording a video lesson is not that easy.

Yes, it was not easy at first. A few years ago, we recorded videos in a makeshift studio in the office using a program written by students, which was sometimes buggy. But the hardest part was working on camera. In 2016, we recorded only 4 topics for the entire video course, 2 were mine, and one each from Olya Musikhina and Nastya Ronzhina, and this process took a lot of effort and time.

We were still burning with the idea of recording all the topics theoretical course, and didn't want to give up. Then we thought, what if we find a person who is confident in front of the camera, a kind of face of the course? Dima Yakin became such a person. At the beginning of May 2017, we started working on a new course, it seemed time was running out. But we did not take into account that it is very difficult for a person who has never taught testing or been immersed in working with a live audience to tell our topics. You can’t just take and record a video course with someone who didn’t teach it in real life! We recorded several videos with Dima, but they were not easy for us either.

Where did you find teachers who are also great in front of the camera?

There were 11 teachers, some of whom would like to teach the course but had no experience. Then we decided to hold master classes on testing for Kontorovites. This way we kill two birds with one stone: we introduce employees to the basics of testing and rehearse course topics in front of a live audience. When a teacher practices a topic in front of an audience, he can easily record a video lesson.

How are your classes going now, can you already see the difference?

What other new products await the cadets?

Over the past two courses, we have honed the sequence of classes. Now we have built it similar to how it is done in ISTQB. This is a tester certification program recognized throughout the world. We now have clearly defined blocks: for example, testing tools and testing methods. We talked about the white and black box approaches, and the tester's ammunition. The topic “Test Development Process” appeared, where we described in detail how a tester thinks, how he prepares, and where he starts.

We pay great attention to practice. At the end of the course, there will traditionally be a Big Practice - these are three classes in which the guys will test a real application - the Diadoc promo site.

It’s clear why students need this course. Everyone wants to learn from Contour professionals. But why does Contour himself need it?

The course helps you find smart testers for an internship or to join your team right away. And we’re not just talking about those who took the course. For example, this year we received test from a true professional. The girl who sent it was already very high level, and our course simply wouldn’t suit her - she already knows all this. We try to invite such people to interviews, our parties, and not lose sight of them. Working on the course also improves the teachers themselves. While you are explaining the topic, you can look at it from different angles, see what you didn’t notice while working.

What prospects does the course have, what are your plans, will you take over the world?

We hope that the course on ulearn will become a base, a kind of franchise, for teachers in other cities of the Circuit. Of course, we will also enrich it with notes for teachers and manuals, but it can already be considered a full-fledged course. Any company tester not even from Yekaterinburg can start teaching our course in their city. And, of course, we are looking forward to seeing everyone next year for the new Software Tester course. Follow the news and you won't miss it!

Kontur not only creates its own online courses, but also supports external authors and developers. ulearn.me already has courses on programming, design, security, and several short courses for experienced developers. If you have a cool idea for a new course -
